A SCRIPTURAL DEFENSE SUPPORTING THE DEITY OF CHRIST

IF YOU'RE A MEMBER OF A RELIGIOUS GROUP THAT VALUES THE BIBLE BUT DISCOURAGES READING MATERIAL NOT WRITTEN BY YOUR GROUP, BE ASSURED THAT THE MAJORITY OF THIS ARTICLE IS WORD-FOR-WORD SCRIPTURE FROM THE BIBLE. THE COMMENTARY IS LIMITED & WRITTEN IN BLUE TO HELP YOU DISTINGUISH IT FROM THE QUOTED SCRIPTURES.

IS JESUS GOD?

This is a question of the ages, an important one that deserves a thorough answer.

Christians regard Jesus as being God, as one equal party of the Trinity. Like the peel, core & flesh of an apple, they’re all parts of a whole, whether together or separate.

Many cults, sects & religions deny that Jesus is God, so it's imperative to examine the evidence & carefully decide what you believe.

I've quoted a plethora of Bible verses in order to prove that the doctrine of the Trinity isn’t a man-made concept but is based on numerous scriptures throughout the Old & New Testaments. If you have a high regard for the Bible, reading this will be worth your time! You’ll appreciate the revelation that comes as you read through these scriptures.

These verses are from the New International Version of the Bible on BibleGateway.com, with bold font added for emphasis.

Let's begin by looking at a famous verse sung around Christmas time...

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

ISAIAH USED THE WORDS "MIGHTY GOD" & “EVERLASTING FATHER” WHEN PROPHESYING ABOUT CHRIST!

Why would The Father (Jehovah) allow Jesus to be called "Mighty God" & "Everlasting Father?" And it's interesting that Jesus was also referred to as the "Wonderful Counselor," which is the Holy Spirit’s title.

And, it doesn't say "a Mighty God" but simply "Mighty God." (This may seem blasphemous to you if it’s contrary to what you’ve been taught.)

Deuteronomy 32:39a

"See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me.

2 Samuel 7:22

"How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.

If Jesus was created & has not existed forever like the Father, as some believe, how can the following verse be true?

Isaiah 43:10

"You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.

JESUS AS CREATOR

Genesis 1:26-27

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

John 1:1-3

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

Isaiah 45:18

For this is what the LORD says—he who created the heavens,
he is God
; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—
he says: "I am the LORD, and there is no other.

OTHER SCRIPTURES THAT INDICATE JESUS ISN’T JUST THE SON OF GOD

John 1:18

No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,
who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

John 5:18

For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 10:31-33

31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"

33 "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

John 20:27-29

27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

John 14:5-10

5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me

THE SPIRIT, FATHER & SON ARE THE SAME YET SEPARATE

Matthew 28:19

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,...

John 14:26

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

1 Peter 1:2

...who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

HOLY SPIRIT IS A WHO NOT AN IT

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AN ACTUAL BEING/PERSONALITY VS. AN IMPERSONAL FORCE, AS SOME RELIGIONS CLAIM.

* The Holy Spirit is called the Counselor & is able to speak, teach, testify, advocate, lead, guide, reveal truth, etc. These are all characteristics of someone vs. something. (see Luke 12:12, John 14:16, John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7, Acts 1:16, Acts 10:19-20, Acts 13:2 & 1 Corinthians 2:13)

* We can lie to the Holy Spirit. (Acts 5:3-4)

* We’re also capable of grieving Him, so The Holy Spirit has feelings. (Ephesians 4:30 & Isaiah 63:10)

HOLY SPIRIT, SPIRIT OF GOD & SPIRIT OF CHRIST ARE USED INTERCHANGEABLY

Some religions that deny the deity of Jesus also deny that the Holy Spirit can live “in” us, but read the following verses to determine what the Bible says.

And notice carefully how God, God's Spirit, Spirit of his Son, Spirit of Christ & Spirit of truth are used to refer to the same entity!

1 Corinthians 3:16

Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

1 John 3:24

The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Acts 5:3-4

3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."

John 14:15-18

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Romans 8:11

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Galatians 4:6

Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."

Romans 8:9

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

We need the Bible, but we also need the Holy Spirit to guide us & teach us how to interpret the scriptures. We can’t simply rely on our own intellect.

John 16:13-14

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

Jesus said the Holy Spirit “will bring glory to me.” If Jesus isn’t equal to the Almighty, why is the Holy Spirit glorifying the Son instead of the Father?

NOW FOR THE MOST CONVINCING VERSES

The following verses say that the King eternal/King of kings is the only God & ruler.

1 Timothy 1:17

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:15

...which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

Who is the King of kings and Lord of lords?

Revelation 17:14

They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers."

THE LAMB IS THE KING OF KINGS & LORD OF LORDS!

And, Jesus is worshiped all throughout the Book of Revelation (angels bowing down, etc.)

Revelation 5:12

In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"

If somehow you can refute all of the above verses, what about the following ones?

Read these 3 scriptures to determine who is the Alpha & Omega, the First & the Last.

Revelation 1:12-13 & 17-18

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man,…

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. 18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Revelation 2:8

"To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again.

Revelation 22:12-13

12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

THE ONE WHO DIED & CAME TO LIFE AGAIN & WHO IS COMING SOON IS THE ALPHA & OMEGA, THE FIRST & THE LAST.

THEREFORE JESUS IS THE ALPHA & OMEGA, THE FIRST & THE LAST, THE BEGINNING & THE END!

AND IF HE IS THE BEGINNING, HE WAS NOT CREATED!

Revelation 1:7-8

7 "Look, he is coming with the clouds," and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him"; and all the peoples of the earth "will mourn because of him." So shall it be! Amen. 8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
