  • ENZYMEDICA DIGEST GOLD   1 capsule w/ meals
    I had some blood & stool testing done that indicated I have malabsorption problems; therefore I take a digestive enzyme with every meal to help my body absorb the nutrients from food. As is the case with most of the supplements on this page, this powerful digestive enzyme was highly recommended to me by healthcare professionals I trust. Because of the higher cost, I only take this with foods that seem harder to digest &/or when concerned about cross-contamination of gluten or dairy. My husband takes it when eating gluten to help prevent any negative symptoms. 
  • NATURE'S LIFE BROMELAIN & PAPAIN   500 mg x 1/day, on an empty stomach
    Proteolytic enzymes are taken with meals to aid in digesting proteins or taken in between meals to decrease inflammation & accelerate healing of the digestive tract. Bromelain is known to decrease mucus as well.

SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP TREAT & PREVENT

The supplements in this category have proven themselves to be effective in preventing & fighting sicknesses. On multiple occasions when I've felt like I was coming down with a cold or strep throat & quickly loaded-up on these products, the symptoms completely disappeared or were diminished & short-lived! Considering I used to catch a cold about every 6 weeks, I'm grateful to have found these valuable products!

  • CARLSON VITAMIN D3   
    For a maintenance dose, I take 5,000 IU of Vit D3 every day. Some doctors suggest taking up to 10 times that amount, for up to 3 days when fighting an illness. 
  • DR. OHHIRA'S PROBIOTIC ESSENTIAL   1-2/day w/ meals
    This probiotic is great for traveling since it doesn’t require refrigeration. I alternate every 2 weeks with Nature’s Sunshine Probiotic Eleven. 
  • ECOLOGICAL FORMULAS VITAMIN C POWDER (FROM TAPIOCA)   
    Powder is my favorite form of Vit C & tapioca is a great alternative source for those avoiding corn. I keep a 1/4 tsp measuring spoon in the container & use 1 scoop after breakfast & dinner, mixed with water. I take approximately 2,000mg/day as a maintenance dose & more when feeling ill. You can take up to bowel tolerance, meaning take as much as needed, as long as it doesn't cause loose stools. 
  • NATURE'S ANSWER LIQUID ASTRAGALUS   as needed, when feeling ill
    My husband & I are convinced that Astragalus has helped us prevent & shorten illnesses. It's amazing! We don't plan on spending another cold & flu season without it! I prefer the liquid form because of the topical treatment it provides while going down the digestive tract.       
  • NATURE'S SUNSHINE PROBIOTIC ELEVEN   1-2/day w/ meals (Keep refrigerated.)
    I alternate with Dr. Ohhira's Probiotic Essential; 2 weeks on & 2 weeks off. 
  • NUTRAMEDIX TAKUNA MICROBIAL DEFENSE   as needed, when feeling ill
    This is another go-to product when we feel like we're getting sick. A little of this goes a long way in working to prevent an illness from fully developing. And I've been advised to take 2 dropperfuls every hour for flu-like symptoms. 
  • SOURCE NATURALS L-LYSINE CAPS   500 mg x 2-3/day, as needed, when ill
    L-lysine is effective at fighting illnesses & is especially amazing at making canker sores (mouth ulcers) disappear!

Throughout most of my life, I've battled against the dark cloud of depression. I'm an advocate for using pharmaceutical drugs to treat mental health issues, when medically necessary. I stubbornly suffered with depression for over a decade before giving-in to trying medication. Once I saw how dramatically meds helped me, I realized it wasn't just a matter of willpower; I had a biological condition that required chemical tweaking. In the same way that I take the hormone, insulin, to survive Type 1 Diabetes, sometimes I need help balancing the other hormones in my body too. Unfortunately, in our society, certain medical conditions are more socially accepted than others. 

If you suffer from depression &/or anxiety, don't let personal pride or the fear of being dependent on drugs or supplements prevent you from enjoying life & becoming a more pleasant person to be around. 

I'm thankful to have discovered some alternative choices that are as effective as pharmaceutical drugs in keeping my body in balance. If you're currently taking prescription meds & want to try a more natural approach, establish a plan with your doctor to WEAN-OFF SLOWLY! I can't emphasize that enough! I took 1 month to wean-off Zoloft, an SSRI & that was NOT long enough. I had about 12 terrible withdrawal symptoms for 2 1/2 months, including piercing headaches, dizziness, vision problems & bazaar issues with my nervous system! My body was attached to the drug & did not give it up without a fight. I believe those symptoms would have been lessened if I wouldn't have been in a rush.

    Lithium is most known for treating manic depression, but many people, like myself, who don't have bipolar disorder have benefited from this natural form of lithium. Paired with Kavinace, this small dose has successfully eliminated my depressive thinking. And I feel comforted knowing that the lithium used in Li-Zyme is the nutritional form of the essential trace mineral & natural chemical element that we already ingest in our normal diets, unlike the pharmaceutical form. 
  • CARLSON ELITE OMEGA-3 GEMS FISH OIL   810 mg x 2-3/day, w/ meals
    Fish oil has numerous benefits. I especially appreciate the way it helps me feel more clear-headed & upbeat. I trust the Carlson line & choose this product because of the exceptionally high % of EPA, which has been found to improve depression.
  • NEUROSCIENCE KAVINACE   1/day in evening; plus 1 extra, as needed
    KAVINACE IS POSSIBLY MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE SUPPLEMENT! When I feel irritable, I pop one of these in my mouth & within 30 minutes, I feel calm, without any side-effects! In my experience, amino acids are some of the most effective over-the-counter supplements for treating depression & anxiety. Because of their power, use with caution & under the care of a professional health care provider.
  • NUTRAMEDIX MAGNESIUM MALATE   3-5/day, with meals
    Magnesium deficiency is a common problem, but not all forms of magnesium are created equal. I've had multiple health care providers recommend magnesium malate as the preferred form. You can take up to bowel tolerance, meaning take as much as needed, as long as it doesn't cause loose stools.

    We've benefited from various essential oils for miscellaneous ailments. My favorite is peppermint oil combined w/ jojoba oil to alleviate nausea & treat headaches.   • SOURCE NATURALS GLUCOSAMINE CHONDROITIN COMPLEX W/ MSM
    Glucosamine Chondroitin is known for rebuilding connective tissues in the body.  Glucosamine Sulfate is involved in building tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the thick fluid that surrounds joints. Chondroitin Sulfate is normally found in cartilage around joints and may reduce joint pain. This product is effective, but it often takes about 6 weeks of daily use before noticing a difference.
